Part D Drugs Enrollment Period

Secure Your Part D Coverage

Part D enrollment periods are your gateway to prescription drug coverage. Understanding these periods is crucial to ensuring you have the right coverage when you need it.

The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) for Part D aligns with your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period. It starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after your birthday month. This seven-month window is your first chance to enroll in a Part D plan without facing a late enrollment penalty.

The Opem Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. This is your yearly opportunity to switch Part D plans, enroll in a plan if you didn’t do so during your IEP, or drop your Part D coverage. Think of it as your Opem prescription check-up!

If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage, you can also make changes during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31 each year.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) are available in specific situations, such as moving out of your plan’s service area, losing other creditable drug coverage, or qualifying for Extra Help. These periods provide flexibility when life changes impact your coverage needs.

Remember, if you don’t enroll in Part D when you’re first eligible and don’t have other creditable drug coverage, you may face a late enrollment penalty if you decide to enroll later. This penalty is added to your monthly premium for as long as you have Part D coverage.
